This year, the project will focus on Primary Education. The project aims to understand and influence the interest in and motivation for STEM subjects of students at this educational stage.
The Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University has launched the fourth year of the STEMotiv project. This project aims to understand and influence the interest in and motivation for STEM subjects of Compulsory Secondary Education (CSE) students. In addition, this year the researchers intend to strengthen this impact and increase the participation of Gipuzkoan schools. To this end, the organizing team has opened registration so that all Gipuzkoan schools can participate in the project. Today, as in the past, the involvement of schools from different Gipuzkoan networks is essential to spark motivation for STEM subjects.
To date, projects have been carried out at nine schools in Gipuzkoa, with the participation of more than 2,000 CSE students. In the current year, which has just opened, the idea is to continue the same work and extend it to include Primary Education students, since the research team considers it extremely important to influence students at an early age in order to increase their motivation. Furthermore, the organizers believe that participation in STEM projects can have a positive influence on students in terms of motivation for STEM disciplines.

A recognized project
In 2022, the STEMotiv project won second prize in a contest held by the Department of Education of the Basque Government whose purpose was to highlight the best educational practices in science and technology. Ikaslan Gipuzkoa and Vicomtech participated in the project, which was sponsored by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University.
The Vicomtech technology center will continue its service as technological partner, joined this year by EMUN and Talaios Koop. EMUN will offer an awareness and advisory service to incorporate the gender perspective into the STEM educational framework. For its part, Talaios Koop will contribute to defining the role of Technology, Engineering and Digitalization in projects.
The STEMotiv project is carried out thanks to assistance from the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa for the development of competitive research projects.
