SmartEnCity project’s main objective is to develop a highly adaptable and replicable systemic approach towards urban transformation into sustainable, smart and resource-efficient urban environments in Europe through the integrated planning and implementation of measures aimed at improving energy efficiency in main consuming sectors in cities, while increasing their supply of renewable energy, and demonstrate its benefits.

The project has launched four online training courses for 2020 to learn from the experiences of the SmartEnCity project partners, as well as from selected external professionals in this field. The first session will take place on February 20th at 14.00. The sessions have been designed to train representatives, managers and promoters of cities and municipalities on the tools that will help them to decarbonise their cities in the near future.

With this series of online training courses, SmartEnCity offers practical instructions and step-by-step guidance on how to plan and carry out a successful zero carbon transition. The format of the lessons will consist of clear explanations and practical real-life examples combined with experience sharing.

  • Lesson 1 is called “The SmartEnCity Way towards Zero Carbon City: The Cities4ZERO Strategy and Integrated Energy Planning”. The Cities4ZERO Urban Transformation Strategy for Cities’ Decarbonisation (the Cities4ZERO strategy) and the Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) methodology will be discussed. In a subsequent panel discussion, the three Lighthouse Cities of SmartEnCity, Sonderborg (Denmark), Tartu (Estonia) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), will talk about their individual ways of approaching this journey.
  • In lesson 2, we will discuss how governance-related obstacles and political barriers can be tackled, and maybe even overcome.
  • Lesson 3 focuses on the question “Where are we now?” going into more detail about city analysis and diagnosis, with insights from our Lighthouse City Sonderborg and Follower City Asenovgrad.

The final lesson 4 presents the SmartEnCity planning process, illustrating how it has been addressed and implemented in practice in our Lighthouse Cities Tartu and Vitoria-Gasteiz and our Follower City Lecce. To see the full agenda, please click here.

The aim is to disseminate the knowledge generated in the four years of the SmartEnCity project and to train those interested in becoming specialists in the Smart City themselves.

As a Lighthouse Project of European Smart Cities and Communities, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme, the online training course will be free of charge.
