The initiative aims to promote STEAM topics – science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics –among youth and has been jointly developed by the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon and Ikastolen Elkartea
The first edition of the STEAM Euskadi Awards, jointly organised by the Department of Education of the Basque Government and the Innobasque Basque Agency for Innovation has acknowledged the ElkarMaker project as one of its finalists, in recognition of its commitment to promoting entrepreneurship in STEAM topics among youth. The project jointly developed by the Higher Polytechnic School and Ikastolen Elkartea encourages inter-cooperation between different training levels for the development of a project with a technological and engineering essence for a year, combining Design Thinking and maker philosophies. Thus, the goal is to promote skills such as creativity, the ability to take risks, collaboration and perseverance among Basque youth.
Moving towards a STEAM society
The main objective of the STEAM Euskadi Awards is to highlight and make visible the initiatives that promote STEAM education in the Basque Country while considering their results, influence, and level of innovation. Additionally, efforts made to attract girls and young women to STEAM are also taken into account. The composition of the Technical Commission of the STEAM Euskadi Awards brings together the Department of Education of the Basque Government, the Research Centre for Scientific and Mathematical Education (CRECIM) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Innobasque Basque Agency for Innovation. The jury has selected 12 finalists from the 133 submitted applications, among which is ElkarMaker, which in addition to being a finalist has received the STEAM Euskadi seal, awarded to initiatives classified to the first phase.
The Higher Polytechnic School seeks to become a benchmark for STEAM education in the Basque Country, and in this sense, the PBLDay conference, organised annually, has received the STEAM Euskadi seal. The PBLday initiative is based on an exhibition of over twenty projects developed by the students of the 9 engineering degrees offered by Mondragon Unibertsitatea, an exhibition in which visiting students from baccalaureate and vocational training centres can easily view the areas in which the work of the engineer profile is materialised.
