Members of the Road2DC projects meet to assess the first year of activity

Road2DC is a projectfinancedby the Department for Economic Development and Infrastructures of the Basque Government and is headed by Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa, with the objective of creating new tools for designing and controlling hybrid AC/DC distribution networks.

On 22 January, Monndragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa convened all the members of the consortium to a follow-up meeting held at the Tecnalia facilities in the Bizkaia technological park in Derio. This meeting served the purpose of explaining the advances made during 2018 and establishing the lines of action for 2019. In total, 14 representatives of the consortium from Ingeteam, Ikerlan, Tecnalia, DeustoTech and MGEP worked for the entiredaydealing with, among others, the following:
  • Scenarios for which it is considered that the integration of hybrid AC/DC networks could be of interest.
  • Technical, economic and environmental analyses regarding these scenarios.
  • Development and implementation of analysis tools for assessing dynamic behaviour.
  • Development and comparison of control techniques and energy management of the devices connected to these networks.
The Road2DC project began in early 2018 with the aim of proposing solutions to improve the current electrical system. In this sense, the proposed lines of research are perfectly aligned with the research and innovation strategies that focus on smart specialisation developed by the Basque Government, also known as RIS3. Within the framework of the RIS3, three strategic priorities for specialisation have been highlighted: advanced manufacturing, energy and life sciences/health.

Energy specialisation encompasses the development of generation systems, transport and distribution of energy and power electronics for improving power quality and the transition towards a sustainable energy model. The modernisation of the electrical grid through the development of hybrid AC/DC networks, an aim pursued by the Road2DC project, is therefore directly focused on in this scope.

Jon Andoni Barrena, main researcher within the project, is in turn the coordinator of the research line of Electronic Power Systems Applied to the Control of Electric Energy of the MGEP. In his opinion, the Road2DC project aspires to lay the foundations for developing the electricity networks of the future through combining the experience of two universities (DeustoTech and MGEP), the two benchmark research centres in CAPV (IK4-Ikerlan and Tecnalia) and one of the leading companies in the field of power electronics, as is Ingeteam.
