The students of the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies of Mondragon Unibertsitatea hosted a conference in which professionals from different companies stressed the importance of the certification of medical devices since the design phase. The biomedical sector requires compliance with strict regulations and certifications when marketing new products, services and applications, thereby requiring that Master’s students know the details of these regulations to ensure their successful marketing.

Currently, in industrial companies in the health sector, there is a great demand for professionals specialising in certifications and regulations. Some integrate these specialists in their organisations, while others choose to subcontract them from consulting firms, but both of them detect deficiencies in the training of new recruits in relation to certifications. The teachers of the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies are aware of this situation, which is why the organisers of the meeting wished to stress this fact.

Companies that develop health-related products or medical devices have traditional engineering profiles such as mechanics, electronics and computer science, but currently, it is crucial that these traditional engineering profiles specialise in Biomedical technologies if they wish to work in the health sector. After the presentation, the company representatives told us what the integration of a new biomedical engineering profile in their work teams has meant for their organisations.
