The 2019-2020 guide analyzes and classifies 343 works written in Basque.
The 2019-2020 Children’s and Young People’s Reading Guide (Haur eta gazte literature irakur gida 2019-2020, in the original Basque) has been posted online by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences. The 102-page guide analyzes 343 works written in Basque and was edited by participants in the Haur Liburu Mintegia seminar hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University.
A team of 13 people associated with children’s and young people’s literature participated in the preparation of this guide: Marina Etxegoien and Arantzazu Ibarrondo (Oñati Municipal Library); Laida Zubia (Bergara Municipal Library); Jasone Erostarbe (Legazpi Municipal Library); Olga Jauregi (Aramaio Municipal Library); Oskar Loiti (Eskoriatza Municipal Library); Gurutze Urrutia and Edurne Urbiztondo (Kurtzeberri School in Aretxabaleta); Itziar Murua and Txaro Urrutia (former teachers at the Kurtzeberri School in Aretxabaleta); Ana Etxeberria (Louis Eceiza Public School in Eskoriatza); and Nerea Alzola and Marikarmen Apraiz (Mondragon University).
As stated in the preamble to the guide, “this guide is the result of continuous group work and the reading of many works.” Regarding methodology, the members of the team state that “we have read all the children’s and young people’s works written in Basque. We have evaluated them and compared our opinions regarding the use of language, the literary level, the treatment of the subject, etc.”
The works were classified into two main groups: “books to keep in mind” and “highly recommended works.” The authors of the guide also provide reviews for the books in the latter category. The works are organized by age.
Since 1990, members of the Haur Liburu Mintegia seminar hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University have been promoting the annual creation of these reading guides to children’s and young people’s literature, together with representatives from municipal libraries and teachers from the Alto Deba school system. The guide has been published online since 2001.
