Fifteen workers are currently collaborating as volunteers to make 700 visors every week, and the university works to increase its production capacity
The collaborative initiative launched by different groups of volunteers that promote the manufacture of medical equipment with 3D technology to combat the lack of medical resources in the Covid-19 crisis is a reality that is gaining strength. The Mondragon Unibertsitatea workers have wanted to join this charity project by launching the 3D printers that owned by the university and manufacture visors for healthcare staff, one of the most needed products right now.
To do this, a team of around fifteen workers is participating as university volunteers in the manufacture of these products (whose technical drawings are provided by the platforms involved so that they meet the established standards). Currently, the university is using two 3D printers from the laboratories, plus another four installed in the homes of the volunteer workers. Together, they manufacture 100 visors a day, but the university is working to increase its production capacity in the coming days, as soon as they manage to establish the guidelines for action and security to put into operation the other printing equipment units they have at their facilities.
After the manufacturing process, the material is sterilised following the criteria established by the promoters and relevant institutions prior to delivery to the health centres.
The manufacture of the pieces will be adapted to the needs of the moment, and the university will adapt to the product requested by the coordinating entities of the initiative.
