A broad representation of students of the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea participated in the third edition of the HAU contest, the design contest of traditional Basque objects organised by Bitamine Faktoria and promoted by San Telmo Museoa, Aranzadi, Ramirez i Carrillo study, and Mondragon Unibertsitatea.

The jury evaluated the works of the participants according to the functionality and quality of the design, innovative contributions, economic viability and possible introduction in the market, fidelity of the prototype with the original design, quality of execution of the prototype, communicative value of the image, and sustainability and environmental impact.

Thus, the ZURA project presented by students of the Degree in Industrial Design of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Uxue Ariztimuño, Amaia Baztarrica and Olatz Mandiola, was nominated as the winning project. According to the minutes of the jury, the project combines, with skill and sensitivity, the technical, functional and formal aspects of the object, proposing a design that stands out for its richness in language, expressions, maintaining fidelity regarding the original object and updating some of its main characteristics to current uses and customs.

The winning group has received an economic prize of €600 and a 5-day internship at the Ramírez i Carrillo design studio (located in Barcelona) with all expenses paid. In addition, the EAKO project, presented by Aizea Fernandez de Lapena, another student of the Faculty of Engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, received a special mention for the multifaceted character proposed by her design and the connection with the common language of today’s home.

Technology at the service of tradition

The contest organised by Bitamine Faktoria, featuring the collaboration of San Telmo Museoa, the Aranzadi Science Society, the Ramírez i Carrillo studio and Mondragon Unibertsitatea aims to update the design of a traditional object present in Basque culture. Thus, it contributes, on the one hand, to research and the subsequent recovery of traditional uses and customs and, on the other hand, to an adaptation, renewal and reinterpretation of traditional objects from the standpoint of contemporary design, establishing new relationships with history and expanding the research lines and the fields of action of the design.

The projects selected by the jury will be exhibited at the San Telmo Museum during the months of June, July, and August. In addition, in September, the exhibition of the 9 projects will be transferred to the facilities of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, being then exhibited in building 1 of the Higher Polytechnic School, where the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development Engineering and the Master’s Degree in Strategic Design of Products and Services are given.
