A second year student of the Biomedical Technologies master's degree presented his experience of shared learning, while PhD student David Romero participated, presenting a paper on retinal analysis in OCT imaging.
The 38th Annual Conference of the Spanish Biomedical Engineering Society, CASEIB 2020, was held in virtual format from 25 to 27 November. This edition of the conference was organised by the Biomedical Engineering Group (GIB) from the University of Valladolid (UVa), with the collaboration of the BioRes (Bioengineering and Resuscitation) research group from the Basque Country University (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish Biomedical Engineering Society (SEIB).
A reflection on learning
A second year student of the Biomedical Technology Master's Degree shared his learning experience during the period of alternating work-study at Mondragon Unibertsitatea in the 2019-2020 academic year. In this academic year, Aitor Díaz took part in the MEDPRINT 4.0 and ALOPRP3D projects. The MEDIPRINT 4.0 project, an Elkartek project, explores Advanced Manufacturing Strategies that respond to the challenges of Personalised Medicine. The focus of the project is the development of personalised dosage systems with controlled release profiles, combining advanced manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing and electrospinning. The ALOPRP3D project is a joint initiative between the CVTTH (Basque Centre of Transfusion and Human Tissues) and Mondragon Unibertsitatea which aims to respond to the need to generate a new product for clinical use through the electrospinning process that can be used universally for any patient who may need it and who suffers from chronic wounds and/or diabetic foot ulcers.
Exploring OCT
David Romero, a PhD student at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, also presented his first scientific publication at CASEIB 2020, based on the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) project. The work entitled "Characterisation of foveal morphology: parameterisation, gender differences and the effects of age" involved the collaboration of researchers from Mondragon Unibertsitatea and the Biocruces - Bizkaia Health Research Institute. This publication analyses the influence of age and sex on morphological parameters such as height, width, slope or area of the fovea, a region of the retina with high potential as a biomarker. After analysing data from 272 healthy subjects, it has been concluded that there are significant differences in the retina based on sex. It has also been shown that significant changes occur during ageing. These results are of particular importance for implementing future retina-based early detection systems for neurological diseases with a high prevalence in older age groups.
