EMBRYO project kicked off
The Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitate lead a European project that seeks to bring manufacturing closer to secondary school students
The EMBRYO (Engaging pupils into manufacturing: from valleys and local approach to the international level) project was launched with the aim of bringing youth to the world of manufacturing and is supported by Ikastolen Elkartea. The project will be carried out with students from 4th year of Mandatory Secondary Education (ESO) and will involve both the secondary school teachers themselves and representatives of Ikastolen Elkartea and teachers of Mondragon Unibertsitatea.
First, students will receive lessons in programming, sensors and metal forming, following by the manufacture and programming of a table press. In a second phase, the students will develop a project in which they will manufacture different metal parts with the same press. In addition to the theoretical and practical parts, the participating students will also visit the facilities of companies such as GOITI, of the DANOBAT group.
The project starts now and will be carried out throughout 2020, and the Orio and Santurtzi secondary schools will participate in the first pilot test. This initial experience will allow students to define the procedure and propose improvements, and as from 2021, the plan is to implement the project in more centres in the Basque Country and even open it to several other European countries.
Collaborating towards the future of the sector
The main goal of the initiative is to change the perception of dirty work among youth regarding manufacturing and to promote STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths) among young people in the Basque Country, especially among female students. The project is promoted by EIT Manufacturing, a European project that brings together 50 partners from 17 countries, including the MONDRAGON Corporation. Specifically, The Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea leads the EMBRYO project including European partners such as Arduino and PtU Darmstadt.
