The iF DESIGN AWARD 2025 once again proves it is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. In this latest edition, it received more than 7,000 projects from 66 countries, and the jury has already shortlisted the top 300. Among those that made it to the final round are 22 national projects, five of which were presented by students from Mondragon University.

Sponsored by the non-profit iF Design Foundation, the award highlights the global importance of design, its relevance and social influence, and aims to foster innovation for a better future. The iF Design competition seeks to be a platform for showcasing innovative concepts developed by students and provides an engaging platform for the students who are awarded annually.

Mondragon University Participation

Students from the Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development at Mondragon University submitted several projects to the competition, and four of them were selected for the next phase. In the case of the Master's Degree in Strategic Design of Products and Services, a single project was submitted and was also selected.

In the Bachelor's Degree, the selected projects were:

  • UNDERWEAR project: developed by Natale Armendariz during her Erasmus stay. UNDERWEAR is a foldable and combinable bicycle helmet designed to address the low use of helmets in urban areas. It addresses the social stigma associated with helmet use, especially among younger cyclists, by offering a stylish and discreet solution that can be easily worn under hats or caps without sacrificing protection. Its ultra-thin, foldable design makes it easy to store and transport, and also allows users to combine it with other accessories. The goal is to promote sustainable transportation, ensuring safety and offering new possibilities for urban travel, adapting to user needs.
  • Solumonbel project: developed by Iñigo Orte during his final degree project, also presented at Bilbao Design Week in the Talentu gazteak section. The project proposes a toilet solution for people with ostomies, respecting their hygiene and privacy needs and taking into account the principles of inclusive design.
  • Spinix project: developed by Nagore Alkorta, Ibai Arabaolaza, Sergio Da Silva, and Olaia Galarraga. This project, developed as a semester project in class, is a modular floating barrier that autonomously collects waste in rivers, preventing it from reaching the sea. It uses a water jet propulsion system to stay in position against currents, guiding the waste to a storage area. Made with recycled materials, it combines technology and sustainability to effectively and safely protect aquatic ecosystems.
  • Breast Pump Tanta project: developed by Ander Luengo, Izaro Iñurrategui, Izaro Iriondo, and Olatz Jausoro. A project developed in class, Tanta is a breast pump carefully designed to combine efficiency and convenience for modern multitasking mothers. Its minimal number of components ensures quick and easy assembly, disassembly, and cleaning, while its lightweight and ergonomic design allows for effortless use. With its perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics, Tanta is the ideal companion for practical mothers who manage multiple responsibilities.

The project presented and selected for the Master's program was:

  • Erein Etxekidetza project: developed by Aitor Aizpuru, Estibaliz Cardaño, Saioa Guezuraga, Aritz Lekuona, Ricardo Mantecón, Maialen Mateo, and Sara Gondra. Erein Etxekidetza is an intergenerational shared housing project, located in Mondragón-Arrasate, which seeks to create bonds and promote mutual learning. Its name, "Erein," reflects a management model based on small seed groups that drive internal dynamics and ensure the inclusion and representation of all. Three types of services are offered: professionalized (led by experts in health, early childhood education, etc.), collaborative (mentored training), and basic services (to foster participation and collective well-being). These services are available to both residents and neighborhood residents, thus promoting social integration and a sense of community.

The final will take place on June 20 at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Good luck!
