Improvements to buildings on the Aretxabaleta and Eskoriatza campuses are now underway
A new building will be added on the Aretxabaleta campus and adaptations have been made to the historical campus building in Eskoriatza.
In recent months, the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences has been adapting and improving its two campuses in Debagoiena. On the Aretxabaleta campus, as part of the IdeiEnea project, a new building will be added to the current headquarters, while the historical building on the Eskoriatza campus will be renovated to improve evacuation, accessibility and security, and to adapt the cloister.
IdeiEnea project in Aretxabaleta
To continue to be a benchmark in the field of communication, Mondragon University will launch a new project in Aretxabaleta: IdeiEnea. The project has two main objectives: first, to promote experimentation and innovation in the Basque communication ecosystem by providing support for entrepreneurship, among other things; and second, to offer talent, knowledge and advice to organizations in the field of communication. To accommodate this entrepreneurial and experimental project, they will build a new building on campus that will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources.
The new building under construction to the right of the current headquarters will have two floors. On the ground floor, there will be an assembly hall with a capacity of approximately 200 people, equipped with the latest technology available on the market. On the second floor, there will be a coworking space and an open terrace. It will be possible to use the new building independently of the current building as needed. With the completion of this work, the Aretxabaleta campus will grow by approximately 500 square meters.
The new building will be open not only to current students, but also to Faculty alumni, institutions and companies. Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration agreement signed last July with the Aretxabaleta City Council, the new building will host various cultural and social activities organized by the City Council.
Adaptations on the Eskoriatza campus
The Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences is also investing in improving the Eskoriatza campus. With the renovated Dorleta building having been inaugurated in September of 2020, it is now time to turn to the historical campus building. The main building is an historical monument built in the seventeenth century. Before housing the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences, it was a hospital, a convent and a Viatorian school. Since the building is listed as an historical heritage site, the architectural actions that can be taken are specially legislated.
In the first phase of the remodeling project, the reception area, administrative offices, academic secretary’s office, dean’s office and rest rooms were renovated. In the second phase, work is being done to improve the evacuation, accessibility and safety of the building.
First, to increase safety and, in the event of an emergency, facilitate the evacuation of the building, the ascent and descent routes on one side of the building have been modified; the new staircase will allow evacuation of the building using a single route. In addition, the accessibility of the cloister has been improved by having its entire surface now on a single level. With this remodeling, the building returns to the original appearance it had in the seventeenth century. Finally, the headquarters of the LANKI Institute of Cooperative Research, which is located in this building, has been renovated.
The works carried out in Eskoriatza have made it possible to create new spaces and make existing spaces more useful, safe and accessible.
