In August 2024, Zotero has been updated and released version 7 which introduces some significant improvements.

The changes in the new version do not alter the guide How to manage bibliography with Zotero, since the previous functions are maintained, but the following new features and improvements are added, which we detail below:

  • Regarding design and display: in addition to the new logo, there are now two display modes, compact or comfortable, and it offers the option of working in dark mode.
  • Regarding navigation: the elements panel is more intuitive and customizable. The folder you are in is indicated, you can include more fields to sort and obtain a first view of the main data and, if you access an item or record, the data appears organized in foldable vertical sections and also in a navigation bar side. Additionally, all libraries and collections in which the item is found are displayed.
  • The document reader and web capture functionality have been improved: you can save documents in PDFs or EPUB and highlight or underline content in both formats. Additionally, when saving screenshots of web pages you can automatically open them in the new document reader.
  • Smart citing: Zotero offers quick citation suggestions. The citation dialog box that opens in the word processor automatically suggests what you have selected in the list of elements or the files you have open in the reader, speeding up citation.

You can consult all these new features in more detail in the new Zotero 7 tab: Guide features.

The Library recommends that you update your version and install Zotero 7. Also, remember to also update the plugins you use, such as Zotero Connector.
